If you are looking for a quick lesson for the Thanksgiving holiday, you may want to consider an acrostic poem.

Introduce students to the format of an acrostic poem – a series of lines, where the letters spell another word or sentence.  You may wish model one for the class before you have students work on their own.  You can have kids come up with either one word per letter or an idea that starts with that letter.  For example, the “T” in Thanksgiving could stand for “turkey” or for “to give thanks to family and friends.

Theme related words I have used with my students are Thanksgiving, celebration, thank you, gratitude, turkey, feast, family, pilgrims, pumpkin, stuffing, cornucopia, November.    Kids can copy their poems neatly, illustrate their work and display it on a bulletin board.
