What if Journal Questions

Next Steps

Here’s an activity that will get your students’ imaginations flowing.  Either as a whole group or as a journal writing activity, have students respond to what if questions.  Here are just a few examples.

  • What if we used ice cubes for money instead of dollar bills?
  • What if you were born old and grew younger?
  • What if you were the principal of the school?
  • What if we floated around as if in outer space?
  • What if there were no clocks?
  • What if your parent was the President of the United States?
  • What if it never rained again?
  • What if television had never been invented?

  1. I used these with my first and second graders as well. Here are a few more …
What if it actually rained cats and dogs?
What if everyone looked the same?
What if there were no holidays?
What if you were in charge at home?
    What if everything turned green?
What if there was no electricity?
What if we went to school at night instead of during the day?
