Kindergarten Pattern Strips

Next Steps

When it comes to teaching mathematics to the very young, it’s important to focus on hands on activities.  Here is an independent learning center activity I use in my classroom.  I cut construction paper into long strips and place a sticker on the left hand side to show students where to begin. Strips will last longer if laminated.  When the children are either in the math center or have some free time they take the strips along with a bucket of colored unifix cubes, linker cubes, or plastic bears to the rug to practice making different patterns.  The strip reminds them what the focus of the activity is and they love showing off their patterns.
