This is a tactile letter game you can introduce as a whole group and then have students play as a small group during center time.
Place plastic or foam letters from the alphabet in a clean sock. Students take turns reaching in, feeling the letter, and guessing which letter it is. If they guess correctly, they can hold on to that letter until the game is over.
As students get better with single letters, put more than one letter in the sock and eventually letters that spell a word. Students can challenge each other by taking the letters out in correct order.
An extension is to put letters in a sock and have students make words out of these letters. See how many words each group can make.
