I have a little plastic bear for each student in a basket sitting on my table. Students’ names are on the bottom of each bear. During share time I randomly select students from the basket. Students can share or pass. When I ask a question during a class discussion, I give the entire class time to think and then pull a bear from the basket so that one student can answer. If something comes up, I can also randomly draw bears for special privileges. Selected bears go into a different basket until all bears have been called on once. Then I start over. This way, everyone gets a turn and there is no place for favoritism.
