Just before I announce that it is time to clean up, I take a quick look around the classroom and select one item that will need to be picked up and put away. I let the kids know there is a “mystery item” that needs to be cleaned up. When the room is tidy and everything is in its right spot, I disclose what the mystery item I had chosen and who picked it up. That student gets a special cheer. Works like a charm.
