With Columbus Day ahead, we have been studying Christopher Columbus and what life was like back then. We have done several activities and have also read various books about Columbus, his crew, and the hardships involved.
As a writing activity that I display on my bulletin board, I have my kids pretend that they were crew members on the Nina, the Pinta or the Santa Maria and write about their experience.
Using the writing process, students get to write their final draft on sheets that look old and vintage. To make these, I have a volunteer burn the edges of white unlined paper and soak the sheets in tea overnight.
Always looks great and the kids love it.
