How can you learn more about your students? The first week of school, send a brown paper bag with a parent letter home. Explain that the bag is going to help children introduce themselves to the group. Have families work together to help fill the bag with items that represent what the child likes and who he or she is. Topics to include would be family, hobbies, pets, awards, talents, and anything they would like to share. They can share via pictures, books, drawings, music, or items representing them. Children share in class. On chart paper make a poster about each child after they have shared by asking they group to describe their new friend and share what they learned about that particular child.
