To make a candy cane ornament, I simply have students, using one red and one white pipe cleaner, twist the red one around the white one. Then I have them bend the top over to make their candy cane shaped ornament that they can add to their tree.
I have them add it to holiday presents I send home with them for their family. After wrapping their self made presents, I have the kids attach their pipe cleaner ornament to the top of their gift with ribbon.
